The weekend winners from the college links

The GIST: Team Europe’s Ryder Cup win wasn’t the only big golf victory this week — the college kids have also been throwing down on the links.

Women in the Windy City: No. 19 UCLA staged a coup at the Windy City Collegiate Classic yesterday, beating seven higher-ranked teams (including five in the Top 10!) to seal a record-tying dub. And they didn’t just win the tourney — they destroyed the field, beating second-place Northwestern by a whopping nine strokes. Teed ’em up, knocked ’em down.

• In individual competition, three UCLA golfers landed in the top 10, led by sophomore Duchess of Sussex Meghan Royal, who tied for second. You can call her Queen Bee.

Men at the Ben: Fall’s biggest men’s tourney, the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invite, had more stars than an NFL game in New Jersey. Ten of the Top 25, including the nation’s three highest-ranked teams, showed out. No. 2 Vanderbilt ultimately bagged yesterday’s W after a late surge, with senior Cole Sherwood taking the individual prize in a playoff tie-breaker.

What’s next: Women’s and men’s squads will wrap up competition at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational today. On the guys’ side, No. 11 Washington’s the only ranked team on the course, but that hasn’t stopped unranked hosts Arkansas from finishing with a hefty six-stroke lead yesterday.

• Arkansas’ No. 13 gals are also leading a stacked field, with a massive 14-stroke cushion over second-place No. 22 Mississippi State after two rounds. Can the Razorbacks bring home today’s bacon, or will higher-ranked squads chip away at their lead?
