The GIST: The Chicago Blackhawks terminated longtime NHLer Corey Perry’s contract due to “unacceptable conduct” yesterday, the latest in a drama-filled story that’s gripped hockey fans from coast to coast.

The background: Chicago sent the 38-year-old forward home without explanation last week, resulting in rumors amongst fans and players alike as to why the team would make the “organizational decision” to dismiss the healthy and productive veteran.

The latest: Chicago shared yesterday that an internal investigation found that Perry had violated his NHL Standard Players Contract and the franchise’s internal policies “to promote professional and safe work environments.”

  • Consequently, Chicago put Perry on unconditional waivers, essentially terminating his contract. No information was shared as to the “unacceptable conduct” in question.

Why it matters: Perry’s a Canadian hockey constant. Now a journeyman, he won the 2007 Stanley Cup with the Anaheim Ducks and reached the Stanley Cup Final from 2020 to 2022. On the international stage, he won three gold medals for Canada — the 2004 World Juniors as well as the 2010 and 2013 Olympics.
