Drama on the dirt at Mary Nutter Classic
The GIST: The diamond gals brought drama to the dirt this weekend, with the Mary Nutter Classic sending the most chaos over the fence. Here’s who made a statement, who struck out and who stole dubs with their bases.
The Sooners’ sonic boom: After falling from No. 1 for the first time in two years, the No. 2 Oklahoma Sooners silenced both their opponents’ bats and the haters this weekend. Not only did they go undefeated, but four of their five games were mercy-rule victories as they outscored their foes 50 runs (!!!) to four.
- The spiciest Sooner win? Yesterday’s 14–0 shutout of previously undefeated No. 1 UCLA. Senior pitcher Alex Storako owned the circle while five Sooners blasted a combined six home runs in the beastly win. Jaws? Still dropped.
Fallin’ Florida: The Gators chomped to No. 3 last week due to some truly obscene early-season score lines…until they faced ranked foes. Florida failed nearly all their weekend tests, falling to unranked Cal State Fullerton (more on them below) and swallowing big shutout losses to No. 1 UCLA and No. 24 Oregon. These Gators may be out of their depth.
The unranked Titans: The last (and only) time that Cal State Fullerton won the NCAA Championship was in 1986, years before any current Titans were born. But those winning ’80s ways may be coming back as CSF added No. 24 Oregon and No. 3 Florida to their growing list of ranked dubs this weekend. Turning back time like the ‘80s queen herself.
