The Australian Open finals are set
The GIST: Time sure flies when you’re having fun (or are half asleep) because the Australian Open finals are here. The women’s side features two stars on the rise, while the Joker returns to the finale once again, this time facing a new foe.
Women’s singles: Expect big serves and baseline brawls when No. 5 Aryna Sabalenka and No. 22 Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan go head-to-head tomorrow at 3:30 a.m. ET.
- Rybakina enters with Grand Slam experience, having won Wimbledon last year, but don’t count Sabalenka out. She may be fighting for her first major title, but she hasn’t dropped a match in 2023. Sheesh.
Men’s singles: After two grueling semifinal showdowns early this morning, Greece’s No. 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas and Serbia’s No. 4 Novak Djokovic will face off in Sunday’s 3:30 a.m. ET finals. While his father made the wrong kind of headlines, the Joker put an end to American Tommy Paul’s Cinderella run last night. Let’s see if karma shows up on Sunday.
- Looking ahead, if Djokovic can nab his 10th Aussie Open, he’ll tie his rival Rafael Nadal for most men’s Grand Slam titles. Tsitsipas, who last beat Djokovic in 2019, will be looking to prove a lot can change in four years.
