The GIST: Team Canada was stunningly upset 6–3 by their archrival Team USA in last night’s Women’s Worlds final, dashing the red and white’s hopes for a three-peat. Nobody’s perfect.

How it happened: Marie-Philip Poulin came in hot, setting the tone by netting the first goal of the game for Canada. While the Americans were quick to answer, Brianne Jenner repeated last year’s Worlds performance by notching another pair of beauties. The game was still tied 3–3 with five minutes remaining in the third period.

  • But everything can change in an instant. The Americans capitalized on their five-on-three power play after “tripping” and delay-of-game penalties were called on Canada. The stars and stripes scored back-to-back power play goals before sealing the deal with an empty-netter.

Zooming out: The Canadians may have been beaten this time, but take solace knowing the red and white were in control for the majority of the game. They played strong in front of a loud, sold-out arena, but sometimes the bounces just don’t go your way.
