The Australian Open singles semifinals are set

The GIST: After 10 thrilling days of upsets and very early alarms, the Australian Open singles semifinals are officially set. And with some surprise contenders left standing, the tennis world is topsy-turvy on this national opposite day.
Women’s singles: World No. 3 American Jessica Pegula lost in straight sets to two-time Australian Open champ, No. 24 seed Victoria Azarenka, yesterday. Waiting for Azarenka in the first semi is No. 22 and reigning Wimbledon champ, Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina.
- Facing off in the second semi are Poland’s Magda Linette (who’s making her first Grand Slam semi appearance) and No. 5 Aryna Sabalenka. Both matches start serving in the wee hours of tomorrow morning.
Men’s singles: Last night saw the first All-American Grand Slam quarter-final matchup in 16 years (!!!), with Tommy Paul emerging victorious. Unseeded Paul’s Cinderella story continues vs. Serbia’s No. 4 Novak “The Joker” Djokovic — a man who’s talent is no laughing matter — in tomorrow’s 10:30 p.m. ET semis.
- On the other side of the bracket, No. 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece, who narrowly missed a ball kid but did shoot his shot with two-time Oscar nominee Margot Robbie, will face No. 18 Karen Khachanov simultaneously.
