7/11, 7/11, seven twice, seven twice
From The GIST (hi@thegistsports.com)

Happy Friday!
And happy 7/11…time to start planning that free slurpee adventure. You know who really needs a free one? Arsenal, after paying a world record $1.4M transfer fee to ink Canadian women’s soccer player Olivia Smith from Liverpool. And with that, let’s gulp up some more sports news.

— USWNT legend Tobin Heath, cracking jokes while officially announcing her retirement in a touching The Athletic profile yesterday. Nagging knee issues forced Heath to step away from the game after not playing since August 2022, but she isn’t slowing down — the two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup winner will ride a Tour de France stage this year. Her wife couldn’t be more proud.
Wimbledon
🎾 Smash hits only

The GIST: There are plenty of scorching hot questions surrounding the Wimbledon grand finale weekend, with champs set to be crowned in the coming days. Grab an umbrella hat and some ice packs because the on-court heat has reached its boiling point.
❓ Which first-time finalist will take home the women’s title?: Already an inspiration, 23-year-old world No. 13 Amanda Anisimova is also the youngest American to reach a Wimbledon singles final since a little someone named Serena Williams did it in 2004.
- With a stunning semis upset of No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka complete, Anisimova will now be tasked with knocking off another perennial contender, No. 8 Iga Świątek (pronounced shvi-AHN-tek), in tomorrow’s 11 a.m. ET final.
❓ Can No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz cement his grass-court legacy?: It’s the two-time defending champ’s world, and we’re just living in it as the Spaniard’s quest for a third straight Wimbledon title continues. But if Alcaraz wants a shot at the final, he’ll have to manage the fuzzy green freight train that is American No. 5 Taylor Fritz’s serve in this morning’s stacked semi.
❓ Will history repeat itself in the second men’s semifinal?: Somehow, both No. 1 Jannik Sinner and seven-time Wimbledon champ No. 6 Novak Djokovic hope so. Sinner beat Djokovic in the French Open semis last month, but the Joker, who’s on a historic quest of his own, has Sinner’s number on grass, topping the Italian in both of their career Wimbledon meetings.

UEFA Women’s Euro
⚽ It’s a cruel summer

The GIST: The group stage results are trickling in: World No. 16 Norway and host country No. 23 Switzerland are the first teams through to the UEFA Women’s Euro knockout stage after closing out Group A in dramatic fashion yesterday.
- With the final group stage games scheduled today through Sunday at 3 p.m. ET, scroll on to learn who’s advancing — and which group is in their Marie Kondo era.
▶️ Groups B and C are all but decided: No. 2 Spain already clinched the top spot in Group B (and therefore a knockout berth) before today’s match against No. 13 Italy, which will likely end in La Roja’s favor. That said, Le Azzurre will still almost certainly advance to the knockouts given their goal differential advantage.
- The situation is even more straightforward in Group C: No. 3 Germany and No. 6 Sweden are through to the QFs, but play each other tomorrow at 3 p.m. ET to determine who will top the group and receive more advantageous seeding. Every match counts.
👀 All four Group D teams remain in contention: The Group of Death is living up to its name — technically, No. 5 England, No. 10 France, No. 11 Netherlands, and newcomer No. 30 Wales all have a shot at the QFs, though the paths are simplest for the Lionesses and Les Bleues.
- If England, the defending champs, and France win their respective matches against Wales and the Netherlands on Sunday, both winning teams will move on — simple as that. However, if anything else happens…things get complicated.

⛳ LPGA: Amundi Evian Championship — Ongoing through Sunday — Golf Channel
- There’s a five-way tie atop the leaderboard at the fourth major of the season, a group that includes Americans Andrea Lee (world No. 36) and Jennifer Kupcho (No. 38).
- Sadly, play continues on without No. 19 Charley Hull, who withdrew from the tournament after collapsing twice on the course due to illness. Sending healing vibes.
🥎 AUSL: Blaze vs. Volts — Tonight at 10 p.m. ET — MLB.com
- Come for the first pitch from Seattle power couple Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird, stay for the Friday night lights showdown between two squads trying to climb their way up the league standings. Hey, batter batter.
⚾ MLB: Toronto Blue Jays vs. Athletics — Tonight at 10:05 p.m. ET — Sportsnet
- Though their 10-game win streak came to an end with Wednesday’s loss to the Chicago White Sox, the Jays are still flying high atop the American League East standings. Pitcher Max Scherzer takes the mound with a chance to put Toronto back in the win column.
🏀 WNBA: Dallas Wings vs. Indiana Fever — Sunday at 1 p.m. ET — TSN
- This battle between the last two No. 1 draft picks — Dallas’ Paige Bueckers and Indiana’s Caitlin Clark — is appointment viewing, even if both squads are struggling heading into the weekend. The best place to right those wrongs? National television, of course.
