🏀 Free agency all the time, drafts occasionally
The GIST: WNBA free agency has lived up to the hype, with a myriad of moves coming after the official signing period opened on Saturday. All that action has set the stage for tonight’s 7 p.m. ET three-round entry draft in NYC. Keep those notifications on — women’s basketball never sleeps.
✈️ Here are the biggest names on the move so far:
- 🗽 Three-time All-Star Satou Sabally is Big Apple–bound, signing a multi-year deal with the NY Liberty, who also managed to keep their superteam core intact.
- ✨ 2016 MVP Nneka Ogwumike will return to the LA Sparks, where she spent 12 seasons and earned eight All-Star nods and a WNBA title.
- 🌃 Perennial All-Star Skylar Diggins headlines the Chicago Sky’s wheeling and dealing, which includes adding defensive juggernaut DiJonai Carrington and walking bucket Rickea Jackson.
- 💜 Two-way star Gabby Williams is a Golden State Valkyrie, creating a dynamic defensive tandem with the recently re-signed Veronica Burton.
‼️ How free agency will impact the draft: Talent abounds in both the draft and free agency. Between the increased salary cap under the landmark CBA and the unprecedented number of free agents, teams have had more flexibility than ever in building their rosters ahead of today’s draft. That means front offices can prioritize — and even manufacture — the perfect fit.
- For example, the Dallas Wings, who own today’s No. 1 pick, filled a huge roster hole by inking a pair of post players (including reigning co-Defensive Player of the Year Alanna Smith), moves that align with selecting a certain sharpshooting guard first overall. *winks*

⛳ Irish rollercoaster ride (the sequel)
The GIST: World No. 2 Rory McIlroy has cemented his legacy among golf’s greats, winning his second consecutive Masters yesterday. McIlroy’s victory wasn’t straightforward, but was decidedly human — par for the course for the Northern Irishman — complete with both brilliant strokes and bonehead swings. Truly a tradition unlike any other.
💪 McIlroy surges back to top chaotic leaderboard: The reigning champ had a six-stroke lead, the largest in Masters history, after the first two rounds of play. But the field brought their Sunday best to Augusta National, with No. 3 Cameron Young, No. 9 Justin Rose, and No. 33 Sam Burns all trading the top spot while McIlroy struggled early on.
- But McIlroy regained his composure by the seventh hole, reclaiming the lead to become the first back-to-back Masters champion in 24 years and just the fourth ever alongside Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods, the last player to achieve the feat.
🫶 Newfound freedom on display: In 2011, McIlroy held a four-shot Masters lead before a shocking collapse. The tourney haunted the Northern Irishman, who later suffered a 10-year major drought until he conquered his demons and won at Augusta last year. Now, he’s back donning his green jacket. Perhaps there’ll be Guiness on next year’s Champions Dinner menu?
🏀 NBA Play-In Tournament tips off tomorrow
Official playoff spots are on the line ahead of the always-thrilling Play-In Tournament, which begins with tomorrow’s tilts between the Eastern Conference No. 9 Charlotte Hornets and No. 10 Miami Heat at 7:30 p.m. ET, followed by the Western Conference No. 7 Phoenix Suns and No. 8 Portland Trail Blazers at 10 p.m. ET. The other two Play-In games will take place on Wednesday.
- Here’s how the tourney works: The winner of each conference’s No. 7 vs. No. 8 showdown will lock in the No. 7 seed, while the loser has another, ahem, shot, and will face the winner of the No. 9 vs. No. 10 contest on Friday for the eighth and final playoff spot. The drama.
- As for the Toronto Raptors, the Dinos (thankfully) played their way out of the tournament, using last night’s 136–101 win over the lowly Brooklyn Nets to secure the Eastern Conference No. 5 seed. Eh-xcellent.
🏒 Three of 16 Stanley Cup Playoffs spots still up for grabs as regular season winds down
With just four days left in the regular season, seven of the Eastern Conference’s eight playoff berths are spoken for, including the two Wild Card spots. Only the final Metropolitan Division bid is still to be decided (the top three teams in each division advance), with a tight three-team race between the Philadelphia Flyers, Columbus Blue Jackets, and the Washington Capitals.
- Meanwhile in the Western Conference, the Anaheim Ducks and their Pacific Division foe LA Kings are neck-and-neck for the division’s final playoff and Wild Card berths, with the still-alive San Jose Sharks lurking in the water.
⚾ Toronto Blue Jays outfielder George Springer lands on injured list with fractured toe
The already down bad Blue Jays suffered another blow over the weekend. Four-time All-Star Springer fouled a ball off his foot and sustained a fractured big toe, sending him to the 10-day injured list. What’s more, Toronto couldn’t rally without him, losing twice to the Minnesota Twins for their second straight series loss. When it rains, it pours.
🇨🇦⚽ No. 9 CanWNT newcomer Annabelle Chukwu shines in friendly win over No. 66 Zambia
CanWNT snagged their second victory in nine matches on Saturday, defeating Zambia 4–0 in the opening match of their three-game FIFA Series. Forward Nichelle Prince posted a first-half brace before 19-year-old Chukwu added two goals of her own — her first (and second) for the senior national team. The action continues in Brazil against No. 19 Korea Republic tomorrow at 3 p.m. ET.
