Fool ’em once: NYC wasn’t the only place dealing with a severe storm this weekend — the Iowa State Cyclones brought chaos to the No. 18 Baylor Bears on Saturday, snagging a 3-2 dub and doling out some humble pie in the process. But the Cyclones were forced to eat a slice themselves yesterday after being swept by Baylor.
Double or nothing: Apparently, everything is bigger in Texas, including the wins. Not only did the No. 10 Longhorns take down No. 9 BYU 3-1 last Thursday, they did it again on Friday. And the déjà vu didn’t end there: In both matches, BYU grabbed the first set before Texas lassoed the next three.
- As for No. 20 Houston, they squandered a 2-1 lead to fall to the No. 19 Kansas Jayhawks in five sets on Friday. The Jayhawks kept rock chalking to sweep their new Big 12 foes on Saturday, leaving Houston still hungry for a single conference dub.
Staying single: In yesterday’s Top-10 play, the No. 7 Washington State Cougars sent the No. 6 Oregon Ducks quacking with a 3-1 loss that snapped Oregon’s seven-match win streak. The Cougs, who put up an impressive 13 blocks and eight aces as a team, could likely score a date with the Top 5 as a result.
- But the weekend’s biggest shock? NC State’s dominant 3-1 defeat of 2022 natty runners-up No. 5 Louisville, the Wolfpack’s first Top-5 victory…ever. Making program history? An automatic swipe right.
