Job Listing: Social Media Producer

Remote/Toronto, ON

Are you as passionate as we are about leveling the playing field in sports? The GIST is looking for a knowledgeable, creative and enthusiastic sports fan to be an integral part of our growing social media and content team.

You will have an impact on all areas of the business — collaboration (while being a strong independent worker) is key. Time management, multi-tasking, prioritization and organizational skills are a must.

The GIST is a female-founded startup that creates sports content, experiences and community that are by women and for all sports fans, mainly through our free, localized 4x-weekly newsletter, daily social media (@thgistusa, @thegistca) and twice-weekly podcast.

Our vision is to become the go-to source for sports for underserved fans.

Since launching in July 2018, we’ve grown our community to over 400,000 GISTers across North America, have worked with brands like the NBA, FanDuel and the USTA and were named to Forbes 30 Under 30 2020.

Role: Full-time, 3-month contract with the intention to extend. Hours will include some evenings and weekends on a rotational schedule. Because, you know, sports.

Reports into: Head of Content

Location: Remote / Toronto, ON

Key objectives:

  • Working closely with The GIST’s content team to drive and execute our social media strategy
  • Creating compelling and engaging content across all of The GIST’s social media channels (Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, TikTok, Facebook)
  • Retaining and growing followers across all social channels, while driving increases in newsletter subscribers and podcast listeners

Core responsibilities:

Content creation

  • Manage our social accounts:
    • Sourcing, curating and creating fun, useful, engaging and innovative content that will also drive audience growth and cross-promote other channels
      • Content is accurate and to The GIST editorial standards
    • Staying up-to-date on the sports and social world, selecting what content to post and how best to post it using The GIST’s brand voice
  • Quickly assemble edits and implement notes/feedback
    • Respond to/make creative for real-time sports moments
    • Have the foresight to preemptively plan and execute original evergreen content
  • Work with and manage The GIST’s talent to create personality-driven, social-first, short video
  • Support The GIST’s growth strategy by brainstorming and developing creative for paid social media advertising
    • Help to manage GISTfluencer referral program Facebook group
  • Work closely with our partnerships team to brainstorm and execute sponsored content
  • Work closely with our operations team to promote GIST merch drops
  • Work closely with the content team to improve content across all channels

Community engagement

  • Provide excellent customer service and conversation with our GISTers through responding to comments and DMs
  • Comment and interact with other IG, TikTok, LinkedIn and Twitter accounts
    • Stay on top of changes/ideas our GISTers are communicating and share/implement accordingly

Recording and insights

  • Recording data to gain insights on social media effectiveness
    • Suggest changes in posts/social strategy based on findings
  • Support partnerships team in recording paid partner data via social
    • Opportunity to assist with wrap reports


  • Digital content creation experience of at least 1-2 years is required
    • Experience in a newsroom is an asset
    • Experience in social media is an asset
    • Experience in sports is an asset
    • Experience working with a brand voice is an asset
  • Undergraduate/college degree/diploma in communications/media, journalism, sports management or a similar field is required
  • Intermediate knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, including Premiere Pro, Photoshop and After Affects is required
  • Ability to work weekends and nights when scheduled

  • You have excellent prioritization and time management skills.

    • You’re a quick and resourceful learner who can thrive in a fast-paced, evolving startup environment.
    • You have a can-do, solutions-oriented attitude.
  • You’re passionate about leveling the playing field.
